What this means is that the website/advertiser is going to pay an amount every time someone clicks on their listing.

There is normally no more that 3 sponsored ads at the top of the search engine results, but on the right side of the page there can be around 8 sometimes. For the savvy internet user this is good, because if you're searching for information and you see a sponsored advertisement you can bet you'll have to pay for the information on that page. This isn't always the case, but more often that not, it is.

Why Use Pay Per Click Advertising?

Well you don't have to, but it all depends on what your website is about and if you're selling something or not.

For example, if you don't sell a product, but you have a lot of content on your site and your main revenue stream is from people clicking on the advertisements, then payper click is probably not for you. Why? You'll have to pay an amount that will probably be around the same price as what you'll make from the user click on an advertisement, maybe more and that's assuming that the user actually click on any advertisements on your site at all.

If you run a content based website
the only time I would suggest using pay per click, is if you want to build your newsletter subscriber base. I'll discuss this in a separate article.

However, if you're selling a product or service you need exposure before people will buy stuff from you. If you can't get to number 1 on the search engines, then that exposure may be diffuclt for you. So, you can pay for it instead to achieve the same results.

How Much Does It Cost?

Well that depends on you. The more you pay, the higher up the search engine results you'll appear.

The way it work is that you bid on how much you want to pay every time someone clicks on the link you your site. If someone bids more than you, they will appear above you in the search engine ranks.

You'll want to be in the top 3 at least as you'll get far more exposure that way.

If you bid on a term that isn't very popular, then it's likely to be fairly cheap, perhaps about 10 cents a click. Other times, if it's a search term about business or loans etc, the cost per click can be as high as $5, sometimes more.

If this is the case, don't waste your money, look for a different search term to bid on.

How Much Traffic Can I Get To My Website With Pay Per Click Advertising?

Unfortunately, that depends entirely on your budget.

Unless you're a massive company with deep pockets, you're going to have to be careful on which search terms you big on and how much you invest. I would always recommend that you set yourself a fixed budget. Put in $100 or whatever you plan to use for that month or week, and set it up so that no more money is taken from your card. This way you'll know exactly how much you're spending.

Well, that should be more than enough to get you up to speed on the basics of pay per click advertising, in a future article I'll go into detail of how to select the right keywords for your bidding campaign and bidding strategies to help you better succeed.

I hope you enjoyed this article, please feel free to go back to the other "Make Money With Your Site" article and read any that catch your eye.

The MakeAGreatSite.com Newsletter Is Born

Hello,

Welcome to the MakeAGreatSite.com newsletter.
Here you'll find many articles about how to make a great site and make a ton of money from it in the process.
The best part is, it's completely free and always will be.

I'll be accepting article submissions from other people, who can email them to me at:
infoNOSPAMATmakeagreatsite.com

Obviously remove the "NOSPAMAT", that's just to prevent loads of spam arriving at my inbox.

I'll also be collecting article from all over the internet for you to enjoy.
